Restore iPhoto Library Using iPhoto Extractor

Disappearing Photos

If you ever have the photos stored in you iPhoto Library disappear on you, don’t panic. The files may still be in the library structure from which you can rebuild your iPhoto library without the necessity of uploading each photo manually, checking to see if such a photo is a thumbnail or an altered file created by iPhoto. This is what the iPhoto Extractor is for.

The iPhoto Extractor surveys the entire library structure and copies target files. You can easily exclude files you do not want to import without going through them manually.

Steps in Restoring iPhoto Library with iPhoto Extractor

After quitting iPhoto, go to the iPhoto Extractor to copy the set of pictures you want to restore. A log file of photos copied is created by iPhoto Extractor. You can use this to verify if the photos listed are indeed what you want to restore, or if the Extractor had missed anything. If there are files you wish to add, you can type their file extensions to the list.

Using the Finder, rename the current iPhoto Library from which the photos were just extracted. Verify and compare the size of the folder where the extracted photos were copied into with the available size on the computer hard disk. The hard disk should have enough space to accommodate the folder containing the photos.

Open iPhoto. It won’t find your library because you renamed it, but it will give you three options -Cancel, Create a New Library, and Locate an Old Library. Choose Create a New Library and give it any name you want.

You can now import the photos you just extracted into this new library, either by dragging and dropping the folder, or by going to the File menu and using the Import function.

After you have restored your photos into the iPhoto Library, you can delete the files in the folder where you copied the extracted photos into. You can also delete the original iPhoto Library. This is the library that you previously renamed. However, if you have ample space in your hard disk, you can keep this file at least until you have verified that there is nothing in it that you want to import into the new library.
